I'm not even entirely sure what I should call this. A website? A forum? A
collaborative community? A publishing service? A distribution platform?
One could take the view that projecthosting.net was in the traditional sense
of a web hosting service, but they're now talking about "collaborative"
networks.
An observation on the people behind it: while they're no strangers to the
wild web, I'm not sure that's the intended audience. Maybe there's a
unintentionally naive assumption that _the web_ will be enough to reach all
potential users.
That said, in my own online collaborations I'm usually using a service that
runs as a host, simply because that's what I know.

Its an online community driven by the user, for the user.
The idea is to create a service that operates entirely online without
restrictions on code, content, etc. This has allowed for the creation of new
communities and technologies not possible in the physical world.
The major "news" is the legal/ethical concerns. The site hosts private
projects and is not a technical service.
Projecthosting.net was designed as a means of providing the infrastructure
that was needed to facilitate the work of a user base of several thousand.
While the client base was not quite this large, the technology and design was
fairly open to any that desired to build upon it.
The client base was too large and we were unable to scale the service to
continue operating and it became untenable.
I am unsure of what to call this. Its a service that is open to any that has
the desire and need to use it. I am personally be359ba680
